why seated · The comic mechanism the avant-garde inherited: Labiche's machinery of misunderstanding and Allais's deadpan. Allais's blank rectangle, 'Première communion de jeunes filles chlorotiques par un temps de neige' (the Incohérents, 1883; printed in the Album primo-avrilesque, 1897), is the monochrome thirty years before Malevich and the joke Dada would make a programme.
